Game #5 Preview – 3-1 REV @ 3-1 St. George Blitz

rev-ready-to-battle-blitz-preview
The 2nd long week of travel is here for the Wasatch Revolution. They make the long trip down to sunny St. George, Utah to face the 3-1 St. George Blitz who are coming off a tough road loss to the Utah Heat. All the factors look to make this game the game of the year for both teams. The Blitz and the Revolution both had long road games the prior week, but it was the Revolution who proved that they are capable of making the trip with a near full squad as they came out victorious against the former undefeated Treasure Valley Spartans.
With the Revolution looking to have their entire roster for this next away game, they have no excuses as to bringing their A game. The REV are just about hitting on all cylinders for this game as they lost their first game as a franchise the initial game of the season and have progressively gotten better and better. At that opening season loss, the REV were not fully equipped with all their players as one of their star players was getting married and others had to fill in out of position. Suspensions have also played a factor in the slow start to the season. Well…..there aren’t any suspensions or marriages this week. Former Tennessee Titan David Stroshine is now married and ready to put his pads on. The honeymoon is over. His best man, former New England Patriot Setema Gali will be roaming the end of the Defensive line with his proven dominance and has his eyes set on the Blitz quarterback.
Statistically speaking this game looks like its gonna be a dog fight. The Blitz boast the 2nd leading defensive team in points allowed with 9.5pts/game, and the Revolution sit at the top of the points scored per game with 42. Where do you think that leaves both teams? Well the REV faced the former league leading defense last week, the Spartans who only allowed 4 pts per game at the time, but put 42 on them with a 2nd half surge in the game. The end number might not be the same as the Blitz look to keep Charlie Peterson at bay with their blitzing and pass rush. Charlie fully expects them to be gunning for him, but he’s ready and prepared to fire back. The true competitors will be clear as day this game and both squads will be prepared and ready for the challenge.
On Offense the REV have shown that they are passing dominant team. They run the spread, with 11 receivers getting at least 1 catch last week, and look to spread the wealth again this upcoming week. Wide receiver Toby Christensen is leading the league in catches with 28, and is 15 yds shy of the top spot in yardage with 442 for the season. Receiver David Christensen looks to be healthy for the trip, and looks to regain his momentum that he displayed against the Heat with another 100 yd receiving game & multiple touchdown performance. Big play JD Dawson is averaging over 21 yds per reception and is gonna look to spread the field while Charlie Peterson picks his poison surveying for the open man. The 3 headed running back monster of Perry Laulu, Marcus Whalen, and Jerome Bady are as motivated as ever to get the rock and pound it down the running lanes. They want to show that the REV can be just as deadly with the ball in their arms as they are in the air. Charlie and the RB’s will have to contend with the pass rush of #99 Wayne Alopifo of the Blitz. He has caused havoc in each game this year, leading a solid pass rush. Free Safety Isaac Smith is the leading tackler for the Blitz at the midway point in the season with 23, and look for him to add to that total as the pass happy REV will be heading his direction.
Defensively, the REV have been Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde thus far this year. On paper they are sitting near the bottom with 1265 total yds of offense against them, but sit on the top of the charts in takeaways and turnovers. The “home run” play has hurt the REV statistically, but never really in the game. They gave up a 68 yd bomb to the Shock’s Matt Thornton during game 1, but came back from that to almost win the game. Games 2-4 have seen the REV give up long plays to Devon Hollbrook (63), Tyson Wagner (80), & Britt Hall (68) as well. They are motivated and have watched the film and have seen their mistakes to why this has happened. The REV defense has to read their keys and make the proper adjustments to keep the Blitz at bay. The one area where the Revolution have excelled in is their turnovers and takeaways. They are leading the league in takeaways with DB’s Chris Carter and Jared Harward totalling 7 INT’s between them, and Brady Nielson on the attack, tied for the league lead in Forced Fumbles (2), and Fumble Recoveries (3). Look for these 3 players, along with the rest of the D to fly to the ball and take the ball away again.
The outcome of the game could very well come down to the special teams play of both teams. Both the Blitz and the REV have shown that they can execute and perform this key part of the game. Ricky Dias of the Blitz is 1st in the league with a 41 punt return average, and REV punter Jordan Lindsey understands how important he is to the final score and needs to punt away or punt high enough to allow the coverage to get there. On the opposite side Punter/Placekicker Steven Pulver has to kick to the dual threat of Harold Ragin/David Christensen. Dave has already taken one punt to the house this year, and Harold has been 1 shoe size too big from that kickoff return to the endzone. If it comes down to the wire, both placekickers are locked and loaded for when the call comes. Golden Whetman has had a good year completing all his kicks with 5 FG’s and 19 PAT’s. The Blitz’s Steven Pulver is 18-20 on PAT’s and 6-9 on field goals with a long of 43. This game could come down to field position and put these 2 in a situation of importance. Will they be needed near the end of the game for a game winning field goal, or will it be their booming kickoffs and/or punts that place the outcome of the game on the Offense and Defense? We will see.
Game time is 7:50 pm at Snow Canyon High School.
Game 4 Results – Wasatch REVolution crush the Treasure Valley Spartans – 42-14.

REV running back Perry Laulu
Sunday, May 3, 2009 – Emmett, Idaho
The Wasatch Revolution wrapped up their first half of the 2009 season with a 42-14 thumping of the Treasure Valley Spartans. Despite missing several key players on this road trip, the REV were able to “circle the wagons” and perform at a high level to put the Spartans away in Emmett, Idaho.
With the majority of players leaving on Saturday morning for the 6 hour van ride, the REVolution arrived to Emmett stadium feeling a little travel lag. It showed as the REV were limited in their first half output. The 2nd half was a different scenario. Here’s a recap:
1st quarter
After losing the coin toss, the REV received the ball and QB Charlie Peterson started hot completing his 1st 3 passes on short dumps – mainly to Toby Christensen. The drive stalled and the REV turned the ball over on downs. The REV defense would take the field and would immediately start the pad crunching. Forcing a quick 3 and out, the REV would drive the ball and a scrambling Peterson would find a well covered Roger Shulze in the front of the end zone. Shulze made a strong catch in traffic and his catch put some energy into the game. At the end of 1, the REV led 7-0.
2nd quarter
The REV defense continued to force Spartan QB’s Nate Cone and Tom Bennett out of the pocket and running for their lives. Defensive additions Pene Talamaivao and James Filiaga would fill in nicely all afternoon. Pene was a demon vs. the Utah Wolverines and his continued domination in the middle of the REV defense has been a huge factor in defensive productivity. The LB core also made multiple bone crunching tackles throughout the afternoon.
If there is one weakness of the REV defense, it has been the “home run” play for opponents. Usually these big plays are preceded by some type of defense penalty call that bails out the opponent. The Spartans were able to get on the board with a 1 yard TD reception from preceding penalties.
With the score tied 7-7, the REV offense answered – meekly. With big catches by WR Trevor Jensen and Toby Christensen, the REV were able to move the ball enough to allow Golden Whetman to hit 2 monster field goals that left NO DOUBT about who the best kicker in the RMFL is. Golden smacked both his kicks squarely from 40+ and shifted momentum in the REVolutions favor. 13-7 at half.
3rd Quarter
Sensing some “bitchassness” – defensive coordinator Ev Matagi turned up the heat on the REV at halftime. The REV defense responded as they forced a punt by the Spartans that put the REV in control at their own 9-yard line. Despite a false start on 1st down, the REV were able to dig themselves out of hole. With 2 key receptions by TE Ryan Seely and a 6 yard bursting run by Perry Laulu, the REV were able to get some breathing room. Sensing some offensive energy, REV head coach Eric Drage put in “the Predator” – Harold Ragin. QB Charlie Peterson knew what to do immediately. With a simple “huck and chuck” by QB Peterson, the Predator streaked down the sideline on a 77 yard TD bomb that put the REV up for good at 20-7.
The REV defense would force a turnover as Brady Nielson – “chicken legs” – would make an outstanding interception on a crossing route. After that turnover, the REV would respond with a TD pass to RMFL leading receiver Toby Christensen. WR Rich Garden would put a stamp of authority on a streak down the right sideline that also poured gas on the REV fire.
At 26-7, Kicker Golden Whetman and holder Jordan Lindsay decided to put in a 2 pt. play with nobody up front knowing about it. It worked like magic as Golden would find Ryan Seely for the 2 point conversion and put the REV up 28-7. Minutes later Toby would add another touchdown on an aggressive reception amongst 2 Treasure Valley Spartans. Toby attacked the football all night and made key plays through out the evening. At the end of the 3rd, the REV led 35-7.
4th Quarter
To Treasure Valley’s credit, they never gave up on their home field. They scored quickly in the 4th quarter on a deep throw to WR Britt Hall. Closing the gap to 35-14, things got interesting. A huge rainfall poured out onto the field and with 11 minutes left in the 4th, the Spartans chose to kick an onside kick. It bounced harmlessly into the waiting arms of DB Cris Carter and the REV offense took over.
Working the clock in the pouring rain, the REV faced a 3rd and 8 situation that WR JD Dawson was able to convert into a first down after a reception on the REV sideline. Despite diving and tapping the football on the pylon with both hands, the sideline judge spotted the ball at the 3 inch line. No problem for the REV, RB Marcus Whalen took the carry and walked into the endzone for the REV 42-14 lead. That would cap the scoring as the REV cruised to a strong road win vs. a previous unbeaten Treasure Valley Spartan team.
Key Plays and Player Performances
Back up QB Dakota LaBounty recorded a full sack as a LB on defense.
WR Toby Christensen would keep his pace at the top of the RMFL reception board with another 100+ receiving day and 2 TD’s.
REV LB Brady Nielson would record his 3rd straight game of recording a turnover.
DB Clayton Wolfe made numerous pass break ups and tackles despite eye surgery just 1 week ago.
Newcomers LB James Filiaga and LG Mike Afemata filled huge gaps for the travel weary REV.
Kicker Golden Whetman smashed to long field goals and made pile driving tackles on kickoff coverage. Golden has been a huge spark plug all year.
WR/Head Coach Eric Drage got in the action in the 1st half. He made a spectacular catch in the corner of the end zone, drug the feet and was ruled “out of bounds” by a sideline judge that couldn’t see his hand 2 feet in front of his face. Drage finished with 2 receptions in the game.
DB’s Cris Carter and Jared Harward kept pace as the most “ball hawking” DB’s in the RMFL. Each recorded and interception.
WR/DB/KR Harold “The Predator” Ragin continued his supremacy as a Game Breaker.
KR/RB George Uyema played with swagger and had multiple first down conversions and long kick returns.
REV offensive lineman JP Salisbury, Mike Afemata, John Proctor, Ken Byrd and Aaron McCubbins helped the REV offense to its highest rushing output of the season.
RB Perry Laulu kept his rush average over 5 yards per carry vs. Treasure Valley
LB’s Matt Shoda, Clint Ackerman, Darin Smith and Brady Nielson each recorded a tackle for loss or a sack.
QB Charlie Peterson finished with 4 TD passes and another 300 yard performance.
Congratulations to the 3-1 Wasatch REVolution. What are your thoughts of the game? Leave a comment below….
Game 4 – Wasatch REVolution vs. Treasure Valley Spartans in Boise, ID – May 2, 2009

RMFL leading receiver Toby Christensen
Game 4 – Wasatch REVolution vs. Treasure Valley Spartans in Boise, ID – May 2, 2009
The Wasatch Revolution take the 5 hour trip up past Boise this weekend in what looks on paper to be a very competitve ball game between the REV and the Treasure Valley Spartans. The Spartans lead the league in points allowed per game with 4.3/game, but the Revolution come into this weekend touting the 2nd highest points/game with 42. The question that will be answered come Saturday evening will be whether or not the Spartans have played any truly offensively strong offenses or if the Revolution have played any stout or vulnerable defenses. The odds are looking in the Revolutions favor as 2 out of the 3 teams the Spartans have faced this year, sit in the bottom 3 in points scored.
The Revolution lost its first game to the top seeded Shock and have since bounced back with authority and vigor against 2 highly emotional contests between the Utah Heat and Utah Wolverines. The Revolution make its first long road game and face a stingy defense and offense with definite fire power potential. The head count so far from the Revolution players looks good with over 40 players committed and ready to go. A few injuries and work obligations might leave some important players behind, but look for players in the wing to prove themselves and their abilities this week.
Defensively the Spartans will have their hands full as the first 3 weeks a different Revolution receiver has led the way, with Toby Christensen, David Christensen, and JD Dawson all leading the charge those weeks with multiple touchdown games. The REV plan on utilizing there 2 former Division 1 running backs as well to balance out the offensive attack and prove they are more than one dimensional. Look for the Offensive line to continue its stronghold of the trenches and keep the Quarterback safe to find the open receiver. The Offensive line and running backs will have former RMFL tackles leader and stud linebacker Zac “Jocko” Jockumsen pressuring them hard and finding the ball.
Both Toby Christensen and Treasure Valley’s Britt Hall are leading the RMFL in receiving yards this year. The REV hav e given up a long play in each of there games this year and need to stop the deep threat Hall. They were successful in last week with Joe Mapson from the Wolverines keeping him to only 2 catches for 48 yards, but gave up the home run ball to Tyson Wagner of the Wolves. The dual threat of Britt Hall and Javon Lincoln will keep the REV cornerbacks and safeties busy all night. Now its up to the 2 headed monster at QB of Tom Bennett and Nate Cone of the Spartans. Both with contrasting styles, Bennett being the old fashioned pocket QB and Cone the Slasher type, they will have to contend to the fearless pass rush of the Revolution dominant defensive line. They pressured and helped contribute to the 5 Interceptions that the REV secondary caught during the thrashing of the Utah Wolverines last Saturday. The LB’s of the REV will have to contain Anthony Pomerlee of the Spartans who is in his own right a threat to break the long one. He’s not a bruiser-type RB but has the quickness and elusiveness similar to the Utah Heat’s own Devon Holbrook who broke through for 2 long runs.
Overall the game looks to be competitive with both squads ready to show up and prove their worth. The REV need to pay close attention to this game and not overlook it for next weeks war with the St. George Blitz. Look for the coaches of the Revolution to keep their players in check and focused at the task at hand. This will be no easy task for either team and may come down to the end. Saturday evening we will find out.

Wasatch REVolution destroys the Utah Wolverines. Final score: 73-12

Harward & Gali - REV vs. Wolves - April 25, 2009
Bingham High School – South Jordan, Utah – Saturday, April 25, 2009 – 10:17 p.m.
In a game that many RMFL pundits slated as the “Game of the Week” – the Wasatch REVolution absolutely destroyed their south division rival, the Utah Wolverines. The final score: 73-12. Is there really anything more that can be said? The REVolution led from start to finish and put on a clinic in team work, execution, physical play, team speed and sheer will. With a strong core of REVolution players focused and performing at peak levels, the Wolverines never had a chance.
Here’s a recap of the game: (For game photos – CLICK HERE )
First Quarter
After the Wolverines won the coin toss and chose to take the ball, rather than defer, the Wasatch REVolution defense felt insulted. The REV defense played with a chip on their shoulder from start to finish. With Wolverines QB Hans Hatchett declaring before the game, “It’s going to be a shoot out and there’s going to be a lot of fireworks”, his prophecy could never be proven more accurate. The only problem was the fireworks were all in favor of the REVolution.
After getting sacked by “the legend” Setema Gali, the Wolverines faced the challenge of a 3rd and long situation. Dropping back to throw, Hatchett forced a pass into WR Joe Mapson which was intercepted by Darin Smith. With nothing but green grass in front of him, Smith picked up a convoy of REV defenders blocking and jolted 17 yards to paydirt. The REV took an early lead of 7-0. This was a sign of things to come as the REV defense would score 3 touchdowns off of Wolverine turnovers.
Because of penalties, the REV offense would be stymied as Peterson threw a touchdown pass to Trevor Jensen which was called back because of a holding penalty. The REV offense had 2 touchdown passes negated due to holding penalties. It didn’t matter though, kicker Golden Whetman would smash a 33-yard field goal and put the REV on top, 10-0. The REV would add another 7 points with a scrambling Peterson finding a wide open Perry Laulu on the 6 yard line for an easy touchdown completion. At the end of 1, the REV led 17-0.
2nd Quarter
The Wolverines Hans Hatchett would make a nice throw to a streaking Tyson Wagner that allowed the Wolverines to close the gap on a 73 yard touchdown pass. It was basically the only highlight of the game for the Wolves as the 2nd quarter simply was dominated by the REV. After closing the gap, 17-6, the REV would respond by a long kickoff return by “The Predator” Harold Ragin. Harold has been huge for the REV all season long putting the Revolution in great field position. After his long return, Peterson would find a wide open JD Dawson on a post route. Despite having a Wolverine corner draped all over him and yellow flags flying, JD pulled in a tremendous over the shoulder catch and put the REV up 24-6. The wheels on the wagon fell off for the Wolverines from that point on.
Peterson would finish another drive with a fade route to Harold Ragin for a touchdown. Harold looked like a center fielder as he made a simple adjustment to the ball and snatched it at its highest point. 31-6 REV. After trailing desperately, the Wolverines would throw another interception to REV DB Chris Carter. Carter finished an outstanding defensive effort with 3 interceptions and a touchdown of his own. Peterson then found TE Ryan Seely on a scrambling deep pass and Seely made a tremendous leaping catch to put the REV up 45-6 at halftime.
3rd Quarter
After finishing 13/18 in the first half, Peterson would immediately complete 2 passes, including another 40 yard strike to JD Dawson which put the REV up 52-6. Despite only playing a total of 28 plays, Charlie Peterson’s night was done. He finished with 5 touchdown passes – none of them to league leading receiver Toby Christensen. (Christensen would finish with 8 catches for 91 yards) From that point on, 18 year old Bingham High senior Dakota LaBounty would take the field and perform at a high level also.
The Wolverines offense did manage to score another touchdown on a 2 yard plunge by running back Mike Culpepper. This run came after a long bomb that Hans Hatchett threw playing backyard “500″ as the ball was up for grabs and tipped by DB Chris Carter & Jared Harward. Mapson solidified his 2nd catch of the game and battled all night for his squad – never giving up. At that point, the REV led the game 52-12. REV linebacker Darin Smith would force a fumble on the Wolverines next possession and Clint Ackerman would jump on the fumble and rumble 28 yards for another REV defensive touchdown. The REV would lead 59-12 at the end of the 3rd.
4th Quarter
Dakota LaBounty would throw his first RMFL touchdown as a blown coverage by the Wolverines secondary led to a long 33 yard pass to a streaking Matt Shull. Dakota also showed strong running ability as he ripped off a 13 yard carry after a long 16 yard run by running back Perry Laulu.
The REV defense made it a highlight reel for themselves all evening. They forced 8 Wolverine turnovers – 5 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries. To add insult to injury, the REV offense did not have to drive longer than 50 yards all night for its scores. Poor offensive execution by the Wolverines meant “happy times” for an energetic and dominant REV defense. Lining up at safety, REV WR JD Dawson would make an interception, run 12 yards up field and lateral to a streaking Jared Harward. Harward would return the lateral the distance and cap the REVolution scoring at 73.
Highlights and Game Notables:
Kicker Golden Whetman would finish 10/10 on PAT’s and 1/1 on field goals.
The REV offense had a total of 35 offensive plays. They’ve been averaging 55+ plays per game.
The REV defense forced 8 turnovers. 4 of these turnovers resulted in REVolution touchdowns.
DB Chris Carter finished with 3 interceptions and 2.5 tackles. He also scored a touchdown.
The REV had a total of 19 players make a tackle or half tackle.
QB Charlie Peterson finished 15/20 for a 75% completion rate and 5 TD passes. His best performance thus far.
2 REV linebackers scored touchdowns – Clint Ackerman and Darin Smith.
The REV offensive line dominated from start to finish.
RB Perry Laulu would rumble for his 1st TD on the year.
The REV team goal of 60+ points was beat by 13 points.
WR Toby Christensen hauled in 8 catches for 90+ yards.
WR JD Dawson filled the void left by injured WR Dave Christensen. Dawson recorded 2 TD’s of 40+ yards.
The REV recorded their highest output in franchise history – scoring a whopping 73 points.
What’s ahead for the REV?
The REV are 2-1 on the season and face a tough 3 game road trip. They face the Treasure Valley Spartans (3-0) in Boise, Idaho – then go on to the St. George Blitz (3-0) and finish the extension with a rematch of the Wolverines (1-2). The playoff implications for the next 2 games of the REV are huge.

Game 3 – Utah Wolverines @ Wasatch REVolution football game preview

REV defense lines up
Saturday, April 25th is the day of reckoning!
Saturday, April 25th is the day of reckoning, but for which team? Will it be the Wasatch Revolution who’s expansion into the Rocky Mountain Football League created quite a bit of controversy and tension, or will it be the from the previous season, but lost some key players to other teams like the Revolution. This game from the onset looks to be a matchup of intense rivalry. Both teams are currently 1-1 on the season.
The Utah Wolverines had a dominant 2008 season with current REV Charlie Peterson at the head of the offense, and current REV players Roger Shulze, Matt Shoda, Darin Smith, and Brady Nielson creating havoc on Wolverine defense. The 2008 season was a successful story for the long tenured Wolverines. They played each and every game with authority and drive, losing only to the regular season champs the Utah Shock in the last seconds of the game, and in the championship game in triple overtime to the Cache Valley Bears of Logan, Utah.
Coming into this season, the Wolverines roster looks a little different than before. At the controls of the Quarterback position are strong armed Hans Hatchett. With bruiser Mike Culpepper of the University of Utah playing starting tailback, and 2008 MVP Joe Mapson returning at wide receiver, the Wolverines have the talent and ability to score on anyone. Can the REVolution defense hold these RMFL stars or will they let the big plays kill them like the first 2 games.
The Defense of the REVolution has been stout and aggressive all year. Controlling the opposing offense and putting pressure on the oppossing Quarterback all year. The defense, however, has given up some big plays to opposing players with Matt Thornton of the Shock scoring a 70 yard reception and Devon Holbrook of the Utah Heat racing past the REV defenders for a 65 yd TD run. Will the defense hold strong and not let the big play hurt them? If there is one player in this league who has the ability to change the game with the ball in his hands its the Wolverine’s own Joe Mapson. The DB’s of the REV are familiar with Mapson as they competed in practice against each other in 2008, but will that be enough to control him? We will see on Saturday.
As far as the REVolutions offense is concerned, on paper they have looked pretty good. If you were to ask the offensive line, receivers, running backs, quarterbacks, and the Offensive Coordinator; they’d tell you a different story. The first game they played with only 3 true offensive lineman, while the second game they played on the offensive line and on the defensive side from a shortage of defensive players. The offense knows that it will only get better with a full squad at their disposal. Look for the Offensive Line to be complete and rotating in guys to be at full strength. This will be necessary for them as the defensive line of the Wolverines is arguably one of the best in the league year in and year out. The Wolverines might have the same problem the REVoltuion had the first 2 games with players playing both ways and getting fatigued near the end of the game. Look for the REV to pay close attention to that.
Special teams in a game like this can sometimes be the game breaker. Former Wolverines Golden Whetman and Jordan Lindsey are now playing for their opposition. With ‘JoeMap’ likely to be lined up at kickoff & punt return, the Revolution have to be disciplined and aware of his abilities. Whetman will look to power his kickoffs through the endzone and Lindsey needs to dial down his punts with either height or direction to contol the ever dangerous Mapson.
This game has all the makings of a year in, year out rivalry. Friendships on both sides remain, but on the field of play, emotion and aggression will be found in both squads this upcoming Saturday. The game will be played under the lights of the beautiful Ron Thorne stadium. The stands will be full, the weather will be nice, and the teams will be ready to rumble come 7:00pm.

YEEEEAAAAAHHHH BUDDY! REV get 1st win of 2009 season vs. Utah Heat

REV LB Clint Ackerman bringing the pain
April 18, 2009 – 4 p.m. Granger High School – West Valley City, Utah
On a warm and sunny spring afternoon, 2 RMFL powerhouses lined up for some smash mouth football. The Wasatch REVolution football team would prevail 36-17 against a physical and tough Utah Heat squad. Here’s a recap of the action:
1st quarter –
After winning the coin toss, the REV chose to defer to the second half and kicked the ball off to the Utah Heat. The Heat started on offense with new quarterback, Jeff Wissler (former starting QB of the Ogden Knights indoor football team) and were quickly dismissed on a 3 and out series led by the stellar play of outside linebacker Brady Nielson. The momentum was set for the REV right off the bat with the defense matching the Heat’s physical offense blow for blow.
QB Charlie Peterson would throw 3 straight completions before the stout HEAT defense forced a 4th and 3 from their own 33 yard line. Coach Eric Drage called time out and called a play action pass. Peterson ended up keeping the ball and running for a 13 yard gain on a bootleg. That was the REV offense longest run of the night as the HEAT would buckle down and consistently stop the REV running game. Peterson finished the drive with an underneath pass to Dave Christensen who galloped for a 16 yard touchdown.
After another REV defensive stop, Peterson would then find RMFL leading receiver Toby Christensen on a slant route for another TD. This put the REV up 14-0 going into the second quarter.
2nd quarter
Trying the run game, the REV were stopped cold against a stout HEAT defensive line. The Heat seemed to time the snap count perfectly and made multiple stops in the backfield. This led to some disorganization and tough yardage situations. There were multiple penalties and the tempo of the game slowed down immensely.
After a drive led to a Golden Whetman 39 yard field goal – the REV were seemingly in control at 17-0. 18 year old Bingham HS QB Dakota LaBounty made his debut and threw his 1st RMFL completion to a swinging Marcus Whalen.
Peterson came back in the game and immediately threw an interception as receiver JD Dawson was wide open on a crossing route. The under throw led to a stellar run back by the HEAT. Luckily, Peterson was able to make the open field tackle and force the HEAT to score vs. the REV defense. The REV D made a great red zone stand as LB Clint Ackerman and LB Darin Smith made key tackles and forced a field goal. With the score at 17-3, with 59 seconds left in the half, the Utah HEAT made a huge tactical error. They chose to kick an onside kick vs. a REV squad that had no timeouts. This gave the REV outstanding field position as they recovered the onside kick. 2 plays later Peterson found Toby Christensen on a 47 yard bomb where he was tackled at the 1 yard line. As the clock wound down, the REV spiked the ball with 3 seconds left before the half. The REV then jumped into its “jumbo package” and Marcus Whalen scampered in to the end zone led by the powerful REV offensive line of JP Salisbury, Bryant Jones, John Proctor, Ken Byrd and Aaron McCubbins. Score at halftime was REV 23 – Heat 3.
3rd quarter
The Utah Heat made some adjustments at halftime as they came out with a furry in the 3rd quarter. After the kickoff was mishandled by Roger Shulze, the Heat recovered the fumble and took possession of the football. After a short run on 1st down, the Heat ran a counter and opened up a huge hole for RB Devon Holbrook. Holbrook raced through the gap and sprinted his way to the end zone for a touchdown.
The Heat defense followed with another stop and forced the REV to punt. REV punter Jordan Lindsey botched the punt resulting in excellent field position for the HEAT. Again, they would grind out the clock and the time and would score on another long run by Holbrook. The momentum was clearly in favor of the HEAT at that time as the REV were getting sloppy offensively and were unable to stop the penetrating force of the HEAT blitzing linebackers. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the REV still led, 23-17.
4th quarter
There are crucial moments and momentum shifts in football, and this game the REV special teams answered the bell. After a pass break up by REV DB Chris Carter forced a HEAT punt, dangerous return men Harold Ragin and Dave Christensen awaited to return. “DC” fielded this punt and after making 2 juke moves that had HEAT defenders grasping at air, Dave found his convoy of REV blockers down the right sideline and scampered his way for a 67 yard punt return TD. That was the play that broke the HEAT back as they never recovered.
A few possessions later, Peterson found Dave Christensen on a 47 yard TD bomb thanks to a huge pancake block by RB George Uyema. (George also recorded a sack on defense as he chased Wissler all over the field.) The REV defense locked down the HEAT offense as Jared Harward made his league leading 2nd interception and returned it with a fancy lateral to the REV 36 yard line. From there, the REV would take a knee and run out the clock – victorious. 36-17.
KEY CONTRIBUTORS for the REV vs. HEAT:
WR Dave Christensen – “DC” had a career high in receptions and scored 3 TD’s. His game-breaking abilities were incredible.
LB Brady Nielson – “Chicken Legs” Brady again proved his worth as he swarmed all over the HEAT running attack.
LB Clint Ackerman – Starting in the place of injured Matt Shoda, Ackerman was the REV leading tackler and came up BIG.
DB Matt Stroshine – After missing game 1 vs. the Shock, Stroshine had multiple pass break ups and covered aggressively.
DB Jared Harward – Harward recorded his 2nd interception in as many games.
DE & DT Sean and Sam Matagi – The Matagi brothers forced the action all day and brought strong pressure against a huge HEAT offensive line.
WR Toby Christensen – Toby made multiple catches in traffic that showed why he’s among the best WR’s in the RMFL.
K Golden Whetman – When the ball is cleanly held, Golden again proved his worth. He nailed another long 42 yarder and is a weapon for REV special teams.
RT Aaron McCubbins – Replacing the injured Roger Proctor, with only 1 practice, “Cubs” proved dominant as he consistently handled HEAT blitzers.
RB/LB George Uyema – The ultimate team player, George played with vigor and energy capitalizing on every opportunity to help his team. His sack was outstanding.
Coach Ev Matagi – With limited personnel and multiple injuries, “Ev” carved out a winning game plan that produced multiple defensive 3 and outs.
At 1-1, the Wasatch REVolution are currently tied for 2nd place in the RMFL AAA South Division. They face a huge rivalry game vs. the Utah Wolverines this week.

Wasatch Revolution vs. Utah Heat game preview

helmet
The Utah Heat traveled down to St. George last week, and came home injured, minus a couple key players on offense and defense, and hungry to inflict the punishment that they have been known for throughout this league.
Coming into the game this Saturday at 3:30pm, the Heat might have a surprise at QB if Jeff Wissler returns to RMFL action. Wissler led the league in passing in 2007with 2848 yds passing. The Revolution have game planned for the Heat to come out running with QB/RB Levi Vagana and the versatile Devon Holbrook. Holbrook wasn’t used as much as expected against the St. George Blitz and he’s gonna be a critical part of the Heat’s offensive game plan for the stingy defense of the Revolution, under the direction of Defensive Coordinatoor Everestt Matagi. The Revolution Defense has something to prove this game as well. The defense pass rushed, contained the ‘best receiving corps in the league’ of the Shock, but did not keep QB Jordan Kjar from using his underrated scrambling skills. They look to show that they can not only bring the ‘heat’, pun intended, but contain the versatile athletes the Heat have on their offensive roster. If certain Heat players (Reno Mahe-Philadelphia Eagles) show up, padded and ready to go, expect the Revolution to have a very difficult task in containing the Heat offense. The Heat also have rostered former Arena League standout Jason Quinn ( WR), and if he plays the REV will have a challenge in containing him.
Defensively its no secret what the Heat are capable of. By stating that they bring hard hits, intensity, strength, and size, would be redundant and overused. These guys love to play year in and year out, cause they love to bring it. They wanna smack the Revolution in the mouth. The Revolution offense under the direction of Head Coach Eric Drage and captain Charlie Peterson, understand the emotion that the Heat D is gonna bring. Will the Heat be too aggressive and allow the pass heavy Revolution to spread the field and keep them honest. Or will the Heat respect the pass, and make the Revolution running attack with former college standouts, Marcus Whalen, and Jerome Bady searching for holes with FB Perry Laulu leading the way? Co-captain Hilltop Samoa was injured for the season in the first game, and although the Heat players and REV players are friends off the field, they both are gonna bring it.

Shock beat REV 21-17 on REV mistakes and blunders

rev-vs-shock-last-play-of-game
The 1st ever Wasatch REVolution football game took place at Bingham HS on Saturday, April 11 at Ron Thorne field at Bingham High school. With a slight drizzle rain throughout the game, temperatures varied between chipper and down right cold – the REV played like both. Despite multiple opportunities, the REV could not overcome their mistakes and blunders and ultimately fell to the Shock with a final score of 21-17.
The 1st quarter started chipper as the REV took possession of the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field behind the throwing of QB Charlie Peterson to WR Toby Christensen. The REV started with their first 2 possessions scoring 2 touchdowns both to Toby Christensen. The Shock were unable to handle anything the REV threw at them because the offensive line of LT JP Salisbury, LG Bryant Jones, C John Proctor, RG Ken Byrd, RT Roger Proctor were crushing the Shocks front 4. This resulted in plenty of time for Peterson to sit in the pocket and deliver the football to wide open receivers. The REV led 14-0 at the end of 1.
The early action in the second quarter started with Utah Shock QB Jordan Kjar handling the blitzing REV with some fancy footwork. Kjar basically ran circles around the REV defense as he converted multiple 4th down’s on his own feet. Despite the REV defense giving up a huge rushing effort by the fleet footed quarterback, the REV offense made things complicated for the REV defense as the REV controlled the ball for only 9 total plays in the 2nd quarter. The wheels on the bus started to fall off when QB Charlie Peterson made a mistake by throwing to WR David Christensen on a corner route. Utah Shock corner made a play as Dave got turned sideways and lost the ball, resulting in an interception. WR Trevor Jensen was “johnny on the spot” as he stripped the ball from the defenders hands and a fumble was on the ground. It appeared that Dave recovered the fumble when a swarm of Shock players dove in the pile. The Shock recovered and started with a touchback. Because of the aggressive play, Dave was ripped from the pile and retaliated – a major “no no” in RMFL football. His retaliation, the 2nd punch always gets caught, resulted in an ejection. The momentum of the game clearly shifted after that play. The REV defense would hold the Shock to on their next possession but the REV offense managed to cough it away as a Peterson completion to Roger Shulze resulted in a fumble. Also of major significance, RT Roger Proctor came off the field limping – his injury would put him out of the game and cause huge disruption among the offensive unit. The REV defense made a huge stand as DB Chris Carter intercepted a Shock pass in the end zone to keep the lead.
Despite the poor 2nd quarter, the REV defense held the Shock to keep the REV lead to 14-7 at halftime. Two turnovers – both inside the Shock 30 yard line – cost the REV points on the board.
The 3rd quarter was tough as the Shock controlled the clock and marched down to score on a long TD pass to RMFL star Matt Thornton. Thornton got way behind the REV defensive secondary on what looked to be a defensive blown coverage. To add more salt to the wound, a broken snap on an extra point attempt resulted in a 2-point conversion for the Shock which gave them the lead at 15-14. That point proved critical as the REV offense sputtered in the 3rd. QB Charlie Peterson threw an interception in the end zone for the 2nd time in the game as a tipped pass resulted in another interception for the Shock and another “0″ for points with the REV offense. This put more pressure on the REV defense, but they responded – forcing the Shock to punt. The problem for the REV offense was another lineman down – this time LG Bryant Jones with a broken hand. Uh-oh.
The 4th quarter proved to be a “wild one” as the game started to wind down. After the REV offense blew an opportunity to score inside the Shock’s red zone for the 3rd time on the day – kicker Golden Whetman responded to a pressure situation. He lined up and nailed a 42 yard field goal – barely clearing the uprights into a strong wind – which gave the REV a 17-15 lead. This was after the REV were called for a delay of game that almost put Golden out of field goal range.
With the momentum clearly in the REV’s favor – things were now getting very interesting. The REV defense found a way to contain Kjar as they sacked him twice in the second half – with linebackers Brady Nielson and Darrin Smith bursting through gaps to bring down Kjar. DB Jared Harward answered the call with a huge interception with just over 6 minutes left in the 4th. He returned the ball to the Shock 45 yard line setting up and ideal situation for the REV to control the ball – score – and win the game. It just didn’t happen.
The REV ran the ball and threw a short completion to WR Toby Christensen to bring up a manageable 3rd and 1. Inexplicably however, Toby was charged with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that forced the REV back. They were unable to convert on a 3rd and long and had to punt – again putting pressure on the REV defense. The defense responded with a 3 and out – pressuring Kjar and overpowering the Shock offensive line. Linebackers Matt Shoda and Sean Matagi forced the action all day. Defensive lineman Sam Matagi, Traci Ita and Matt Taliuluu were dominant as they had 15 tackles among themselves – 5 each. Another huge momentum swing in the REV favor – again resulting in the REV opportunity to run out the clock and secure the win.
The REV lined up in a 2 back formation and gave the ball to former BYU standout Marcus Whalen, Marcus was high lowed on a big time hit and coughed up the football. The Shock defender scooped it up and was immediately tackled – only to pitch the ball behind him to his teammate who scampered 75 yards for what proved to be the game winning touchdown.
Despite the setback – the REV still had one last chance. With just over 3 minutes left to play, there was still plenty of time on the clock. Superstar Harold Ragin took the ensuing kickoff back 51 yards which allowed the REV great field position. Down 21-17 – it was either touchdown or nothing for the REV to bounce back. A first down lead run to RB Perry Laulu led to a REV first down on the Shock 24 yard line with 2 minutes to play. The REV had the opportunity to win the game on a scrambling Peterson pass to TE Ryan Seely. Seely, however, was called for offensive pass interference that led to another 3rd and 30+ and 4th and 30+ which were both incomplete. Forced to go for it rather than kick the field goal to tie, the REV ran out of opportunities. The Shock ran out the clock and left Ron Thorne stadium with a 21-17 victory.
Despite the difficult weather and game, there were plenty of positives for the REVolution. The defense proved to be stalwart and came up with huge possession stops. They had 2 red zone stands and forced 2 turnovers – both interceptions. The REV offense also learned major lessons today.
4 turnovers – especially inside the opponents 30 yard line – are simply going to lose football games. EVERY TIME.
Outstanding players for the REV included Ironman LB Matt Shoda and Tracy Ita. Both were forced to play on the offensive line with the injuries to the starters. Both played like absolute warriors. Rookie WR’s JD Dawson and Trevor Jensen played important roles and made plays – both will be relied on heavily in the future. RB Perry Laulu showed off a strong physical running style and HB Roger Shulze proved his versatility. Brady Nielsen made 9 tackles at LB and was all over the field. DB’s Chris Carter and Jared Harward both were outstanding – despite one blown coverage. Special teams was tremendous as Golden Whetman was perfect on his attempts and Harold Ragin proved a worthy and dangerous weapon on kick returns.
The Wasatch REVolution have a very bright future. With a few core players stepping in and filling responsibilities, look for the REV to learn and improve dramatically from Week 1 to Week 2.

RMFL predictions and Shock vs. REV predictions – rumor mill central

rmfl-logo
The Wasatch REVolution football team is up against the wall this week. Listen to some of the comments from “RMFL Junkies” and what they have to say about our team in rumor mill central –
Shock @ Revolution
Chances of the Revolution’s full roster being present for their home opener? 0%.
Chances of the Revolution to build serious camaraderie this season? 0%
Chances of Golden getting on the chat room next week and throwing out excuses as to why “so and so” weren’t at the game? 100%.
The Revolution easily boast the best collection (on paper) of talent the RMFL has ever witnessed. If the roster is true, most Junior Colleges wouldn’t want to play them. Chuckypita has one year of RMFL experience under his belt and knows what is needed to win a championship. I expect great things from this defense as Coach Everest has single handedly almost put together his full defense from year’s past. Add Ragin and Shoda to his repertoire and this group of players (defense) should be banned in 48 states.
The biggest question for the Revolution (besides the validity of their roster) is how will the offense come together.
Whalen was dominant at BYU but never scared teams in the RMFL/MLFA. Toby Christensen was another solid BYU receiver (slow white guy with great hands) but has been out of commission for almost 10 years. I have serious doubts about their offensive line and the team’s unity overall.
The Shock on the other hand have all the unity a team could ever want. With the return of Mr. Everything their receiving core may be the best in the league. Just what J.Kjar needed, more weapons to throw too. They showed us last week that they have the running game to go along with a fearsome passing attack but with an injury to the Diesel (J. Christensen), they may be forced to return to their passing attack. With rain and wind in the forecast, this could prove troublesome against a defense as fast and aggressive as the Revolution’s.
Here’s another –
Utah Shock 24 @ Wasatch Revolution 21
This is my game of the week runner up. If you live near Montana check out the Blaze/Phoenix game. If you live anywhere else come check out the Shock/Revolution game. The thing that separates the two games is rivalry. The Shock are coming off a regular season game with a win and are slowly ridding themselves of all that off season rust. The Revolution have a disadvantage going into this game from the pure standpoint that they have yet to play a real game yet. They appear to have a lot of talent but it might take a few quarters to get that talent to work together in the same direction. Expect a big first half of football for the Shock as they go into the half leading 21-0. The Rev will make some half time adjustments and take this to the wire. Shock win by 3.
What’s it gonna be fellas?
REV prepare for season opener

wasatch-revolution-pictures-011
The Wasatch REVolution football organization is taking the final step to prepare for the season opener vs. last season’s defending RMFL regular season champion – the Utah Shock.
The final practice for the REV takes place on Thursday, April 9 at 6 p.m. at Marv Jenson fields on 10300 S. and Redwood Road. (1700 W.)
Defensive Co-ordinator Ev Matagi has a major challenge in front of him with one of the RMFL’s highest powered offenses. Offensive Coordinator and Head Coach Eric Drage has a gargantuan challenge in front of him with securing the right personnel in game situations.
Look for the REV to come out fired up in this game as they prepare for – what could turn out to be – the biggest game of the season in Week 1.
Also, look for a 2-deep depth chart to come out on Friday – after Thursday nights practice.

Utah Shock 2009 Team Preview
3/22/2009
Apparently, the magic number is two. The Utah Shock had two losses in 2008, both coming from the eventual RMFL Champions. The Utah Shock was also two games away from their first ever AAA Championship. After a dismal 2007 season, the Shock came into the league with high expectations in 2008, but fell short.
What happens in 2009 when the season before, you go 7-2 and are crowned the “regular season champs?” You get a tough schedule. The Shock open up their 2009 campaign in Missoula, then play the new, but not new Wasatch Revolution, and then host the Cache Valley Bears in their home opener.
One thing that the Shock still has going for them is this: 2008 RMFL MVP Jordan Kjar.
To preview this team, you have to take what they accomplished last year, and then accumulate all the things they have lost, added, and changed from last year to this year. Previewing my own team is harder than most people may think, but at least it’ll give everyone out there an idea of where we’re at. (And it’ll give us an idea of where we’re at.)
OFFENSE
The Shock offense is known for being high powered, score at will, pass happy, and no run type offense. On paper, in 2008, the Shock’s leading rusher was their QB. So, it’s probably likely they are still going to pass a lot. But that’s on paper.
The Shock’s key losses will be #1 RMFL leading receiver Matt Thornton, who’s pursuing his professional career in the AIFA. Another key loss will be #3 RMFL leading receiver Chris Liddiard who is recovering from an offseason knee surgery. Losing two of the top three receivers on your team is one thing, but these guys were in the top three in the whole league!
QB Jordan Kjar is back to defend his MVP title, but returns with a bunch of new faces. At running back returns George Allums, a former RMFL All-Star who’s been at Mesa Community College for the past two years. George was a part of the 2006 Muddog Championship team. Leading the way for Allums will be former Viper, and former RMFL All Star Josh Christensen, JC has been out of the league for a year, but anyone who has been around knows JC can still run people over. Expect Stephen Pizza and JJ Moncada to also play key factors in the run game that will hopefully open up the pass game even more.
Now we’ve talked about the WRs that we lost. But let’s talk about who does return. Former Ute Fano Tagovailoa is still around, as is Trent Evans, Chad Kjar, and back on offense is Chris Hooper. With the additions of Colby Cook, Nash Montoya, and the return of Dillon Hofeling, do not be surprised if the Shock still pass. (Weird.) Shock coaches expect a lot from this group of wide outs, as they all have to step up and fill some shoes from last season. But this is the Shock, they are going to pass, and the wide outs will all be a huge part of this offense. Let’s just hope they are ready for the task at hand.
The key to this offense will be the new offensive line. The line has always been small, and always been the question mark of the offense. Now they have some quality running backs, so the line will be challenged. Leading the hogs up front will be longtime Shock player Nick Vickers and Tren Hagman. Joining them will be Chuck Hall, Kurt Horspool, Silipa Tupola, Dave Hemmers, Kelly Kariger, as well as Ryan Crossman. With depth at line, this could be a vast improvement for the Shock offense. They are known throughout the league to be explosive, high powered, and high scoring. In 2009, I don’t think it looks to be any different.
DEFENSE
Known throughout the league as the guys who just have to keep the opponents point total less than their offenses, this defense has had a major face lift. Yes they do return key starters LB Gary Smith, SS Ryan Morrow, FS Kyto Khouangrasvongsay, DE Chad Peterson, DE Junior Tagovailoa, and LB Matt Christensen, but what else? This defense has always been “on paper” one of the worst in the league. But what are they going to prove in 2009? With the departures of Defensive Coordinator John Thornton and LB Kelon Brooks, the defense had to start pretty much from scratch. Calling the defense will be longtime Shock player, now full time Shock coach, Chris Miles. In their first practice as a new defensive unit, the Shock offense struggled against their defense. That may not mean a lot to anyone else, but to the Shock defense, that means wonders.
Up front for the Shock will an array of different players. With the depth on the team expect many faces to make an impact on the front line for the Utah Shock. Alongside Tagovailoa and Peterson will be newcomers Troy Peterson, Josh Slater, Lika Opeta, as well as Tua Nuku and Zack Gardiner who has been with the Shock in the past. Behind them will be former RMFL All Star LB Gary Smith, RMFL All Star selectee LB Matt Christensen, LB Ryan Morrow and LB Kevin Slater Expect players like Larry Jones, Rocky Jann and Danny Franks to also make huge contributions to this stacked LB core.
In the secondary will be FS Kyto Khouangrasvongsay, CB Keoni Barawis and CB Nick Sasich. Expect players like Brandon Hunt, Matt Peterson, and Jeff Horne to also contribute in the secondary. With the new aggressive play calling on defense expect these defensive backs to be on their game all season long.
This defense has always been the bend and not break defense. The one that had to make sure the opponents scored less than their offense. Expect this year to be a little different. As they get more aggressive, expect this defense to have its best year yet. Even if it is just “on paper.”
COACHING/SPECIAL TEAMS
Losing K Bryce Kennington to the AIFA Ogden Knights will definitely hurt, but his replacement isn’t too shabby. Former Viewmont Viking, and Deseret News “Mr. Soccer” K Colton Cook looks to take the reins of the multi-time RMFL All Star. Colton has a strong leg, and awesome accuracy. Colton will be handling the kicking duties for the Shock in 2009, and do not be surprised if Colton’s one of the elite kickers of the whole RMFL. He’s just that good. (Yeah, I said it.)
The coaching staff of the Shock has never been bigger. Helping out with the offense until he is fully recovered is Chris Liddiard, anchoring the defense is Chris Miles, and former RMFL Coach of the Year Jared Emerick takes the reins of the whole staff. Jared, who has been with the team since 2006, will oversee the whole coaching staff of the Utah Shock. Helping out with the line will be Kai Barawis, and also helping out will be assistants Jerry Emerick, JD Young, and Brenton Ing.
Two wins away, two losses to the eventual champs. Everything was aligned in 2008, but they fell short. The Shock only got better, but so did the rest of the league. Where does this leave the Utah Shock now? Only time will tell. The expectations are high, the roster is set, the players are ready.
The championship is our there for anyone. Will it belong to the Shock at the end of June?
Stay tuned..
