AAA Championship Prediction

And then there were two…

Let’s face it, this is the game that everyone expected to see, and most (besides the players from their own respective teams) people wanted to see. Dave Sire even predicted this matchup back in his AAA preview. When we saw the roster put together by the Revolution, everyone expected them to be in the championship. And after what the Shock were able to do last year, coupled with their new acquisitions, we all expected them to be the team to face the Revolution in late June. In all honesty, these are the two best teams in the league and therefore they SHOULD be playing for the championship. Collectively, they have beaten (and beaten quite convincingly) everyone else in the RMFL.

When trying to compare these two teams to better analyze their strengths and weaknesses, I first looked at their head-to-head match. I unfortunately made the huge mistake of attending another game that week so I didn’t get to see it live (this is a big deal because although I’ve seen in on Comcast, I didn’t get to “feel” the momentum swing or energy on the field, as this can only be really witnessed live). I have watched it twice on Comcast, and both times I have found myself thinking that both teams made big plays, and big mistakes. While the Rev definitely amassed the better statistics for the game, the Shock could argue that they made the bigger plays, and made them when they really counted. Another thing taken from that game is that both teams were missing players (due to suspensions, injuries, weddings, etc.). Also, that was the Rev’s first game EVER together but it was only the Shock’s second (I don’t know how well they traveled to Missoula the week before). Either way, because it was so early in the season, both teams were missing players, adjustments have been made, I expect this Saturday’s game to be like two different teams are meeting each other. I then have looked at who they have both played so as to see the matchups. Both teams played the Bears, and both teams beat them handedly. Both teams played the Blitz, and while the score for the Shock/Blitz game was close, I watched that game live and the Shock were in control the whole time and so I think that’s a wash as well (the Rev stomped on the Blitz, in St. George, but then struggled a little against them at home last week). Both teams faced the Heat and had similar results (almost the exact score both games). The Rev played the Spartans and dominated them up in Boise, while the Shock played the Blaze twice at home. The Spartans and Blaze played each other twice and both games were excellent so I think both teams are similar (Blaze/Spartans). This is where the Rev get the slight edge in comparables because aside from their game 1 loss to the Shock, they have virtually dominated every other opponent while the Shock, although winning, have skipped by multiple opponents.

Let’s take a look at player/position comparisons:

QB: this is your classic argument. Petersen or Kjar. Everyone has their own opinion as to who’s better, but I’d be willing to bet that if the RMFL held a fantasy realignment draft, these would be the first two players taken. I’m positive that there are 26 RMFL teams that would trade anyone for one of these two QB’s. They’re undeniably the most important players in the league. Who’s better? I think that argument is similar to Brady vs Manning. It doesn’t really matter and I don’t think you can go wrong with either one. The preference comes down to individual likes/dislikes. If you like someone to throw the ball 50+ times a game, complete 65%+ of them, and then blog about the experience using all the adjectives and emotional rhetoric found in your local thesaurus, then Chuckypita is your man. If you want someone who is a little quieter but undeniably the leader of his team, who is more apt to turn a negative play into a positive using his legs, then pick Kjar. Although many want a separation between these two players the truth is that this matchup is probably as even as they’ll get. Edge: Even

RB: Neither team really has a “go-to” RB, nor do they depend on the run much. The Rev use your classic ground-n-pound approach with their big backs while the Shock use more of your typical speed/shifty backfield. The Rev’s backs are probably better at picking up the blitz due to their size/experience but I’d take the Shock’s backs as better receiving backs. The ironic thing is that this game could very easily come down to whichever team’s running backs produce as a decent running game will do great things for both teams passing attack. T his is another matchup that can go either way and so neither team gets the edge. Edge: Even

WR: With all the passing both teams incorporate into their offensive scheme, both teams depend on the ability of their WRs to get open, catch the ball, and then make plays. We all know the importance of having good WRs in this league (look at the Rhinos dynasty with Greenbury and Young; or the fact that having Lincoln and Hall actually made Ol’Man Bennett a slightly above mediocre QB) and both teams have decent WRs. Looking at both team’s “top three” (Shock: Thornton, Hooper, Cook Rev: T.Christensen, D.Christensen, Seely) you have a decent matchup. I think Thornton and T.Christensen are two of the top 4 receivers in the league (I like Mapson and Hall as well, but that’s another article) and so they basically wash each other out. The next matchup is between D.Christensen and Hooper. Both players are a little undersized and use their speed/agility to make plays happen. Hooper has played in every game for the Shock and has put up consistent numbers while D.Christensen has only played in 4-5 games for the Rev but in those games has put up monstrous stats. It’s hard to know how good D.Christensen is though because his big games came against the Wolverines (twice) and the Cowboys. Neither of those teams have stellar pass defenders. I have talked to players on both teams and respectively, they both like their own guy more. The next matchup is against Seely and Cook. Both are decent WRs but I give the slight edge to Seely (he’s done more consistently this year, and in his RMFL career). The rest of the teams’ WRs all contribute about evenly but the Rev hold the secret weapon, the Predator, who can come in at anytime and produce a big catch and touchdown almost on command. Edge: Slight edge to the Rev.

O-Line:
This is where the separation really begins. In the first meeting between these two teams Petersen had decent protection while Kjar was running wild. The craziest part of this is that I noticed #14 and #90 for the Rev playing O-Line for the majority of the game. Anyone who follows this league knows that Shoda and Ita are NOT offensive lineman. While the Shock appeared to have their full O-Line but now are without arguably their best lineman (Nick Vickers) due to injury. Kjar helps his line out with his ability to run which keeps the defense honest, but even with Kjar running for 100 yards in the last game the Rev maintained constant pressure on the Shock. Also, the Rev were able to run the ball (the few times they tried) against the Shock in the first meeting and now with their full O-Line available I expect them to try a little more of the ground attack. If everyone is there, the Rev may have the best O-Line ever assembled in RMFL play. Edge: Rev

D-Line: This is the tale of two completely different strategies. The Rev use their D-line monsters to open up holes for their LBs to blitz through. They have all the beef necessary to plug up the middle and the speed and discipline to protect the outside. The Shock on the other hand use a much smaller D-Line and trust that their speed will make up for their lack in size and when they do get through the O-Line they are able to chase down the opponents QB. Both strategies work for their respective teams but in fairness, if you had the opportunity to have Ita, Gali, Matagi, Taliulu, Talamaivo, etc. you’d quickly take it. This is where the game will be ultimately won/lost. I gave the edge to the Rev for their O-Line, so theoretically they should be able to better manage the Shock’s D-Line. But when you couple that edge with another advantage to the Rev for the D-Line, you have that vaunted D-Line going against the lesser Shock’s O-Line, Kjar’s going to need some Icy-Hot when this game is over. Edge: Rev

LB: Both teams heavily depend on their LB-core. Both teams have solid players who can step in and make plays when necessary, it was after all the LBs for the Shock that ultimately made the biggest play in the first meeting between these two teams. The Shock appear to use their LBs more in coverage while the Rev seem to like to blitz theirs a lot more. Both philosophies have produced great results this season. While the Rev have the names/pedigree, the Shock’s LBs have done enough to warrant respect. This is a close matchup but I have to give the slight edge to the Rev based on the depth at the position. Edge: Slight edge to the Rev

DB: This is where it really matters. Since both teams are pass-happy, the DBs are going to running around all game. In the first game it looked like both teams’ DBs had moments of greatness followed by major mistakes (Shock and Rev both scored on a broken coverage deep ball). Kyto will try to man his secondary into containing Christensen-Squared (Toby and Dave) while getting a body on Seely. The Rev have the players who can probably man up on the Shock’s WRs which will leave their LBs the opportunity to blitz Kjar. I expect them to put Stroshine on Thornton (this should be a classic matchup) with Reagin either manning Hooper or playing centerfield and taking away anything over the top. The Shock don’t have anyone who can play straight man on Toby so they’ll depend more on their Safeties picking up the slack. If Petersen gets time, he’ll pick apart the Shock’s secondary (his WR’s and himself are just too good). While if Kjar can break containment and run freely the Shock WRs should be able to get open. The fact that the Rev can play man and leave Reagin to attack the ball while the Shock are more dependent on coverage-by-committee, I give the edge to the Rev: Edge: Rev

Kicking/Special Teams: Both teams have good return men (Reagin, Thornton) and both teams have kickers that can kick it out of the endzone (Whetman, Cook) which could prevent either team from even having a chance at a return, I give this a wash. Also, both teams have solid kickers that, when needed, are capable of splitting the uprights from anywhere within 50 yards. Edge: Even

Intangibles: One coaching staff has D-1 experience (Drage) and multiple championships (Ev) under their belt while the other may have won a church ball region game…maybe. However, what they lack in coaching, the Shock make up for in unity. There is very little bickering among players on the Shock which creates an atmosphere of belief, unity, and trust. The Rev are split with players who have won championships (with Rhinos) and those who have been in constant pursuit (Utah Blitz, Wolverines) so they have both the expectations (we’ve been here before, we’ll do it again) and the drive (I want that championship). The Shock have won a AA championship which is the equivalent of winning $8 in the powerball lottery and so they still have the drive for “the big one.” Intangibles: Slight edge to the Shock….

The Game: Home field advantage doesn’t exist unless the drive is greater than 2 hours, and even less if it’s the championship game. Right now the weather report looks like it will be in the high 70’s and dry, perfect football weather especially for two passing teams. The league appears split between who they think/want to win, as many are picking the Rev, but just as many want the Shock. If you find yourself in the chatroom while both teams are represented it becomes obvious that while there is mutual respect, neither team really likes each other. The Rev have the stigma of “we belong here, just look at our numbers and roster…” while the Shock carry the coat of “we get no respect, people just think we’re lucky” while both banners carry some truth, the only truth is that these are the two best teams in the league and they both deserve to be playing this Saturday. I encourage any football player, coach, fan, cheerleader, etc. to come out and watch these two teams beat on each other this Saturday.

Through my years of prognosticating games I have always tried to remain unbiased. I am a fan of football first, and not necessarily of any team in specific. All I want is a good game and that is what I fully expect to witness. What makes this game so great is the fact that one team has all the pedigree/resume that all teams are jealous of while the other team is made up mostly of friends with little (if any) collegiate experience. While the Rev “dominate”, the Shock “do work.” Both teams will have to manage emotions early so as not to exhaust themselves too early (15 minute quarters really do make a difference) but I also expect both teams to “leave it all on the field.” The difference is that at this level, talent generally wins. While I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kyto & Co. hoisting the trophy at the games end, I wouldn’t bet on it. The Rev’s constant defensive pressure is just too much in the end and pull away late. For the Shock, I guess there’s always next year. Rev 31 Shock 21.

REV win and advance to 2009 RMFL Championship

Rev 24 - Blitz 10

Rev 24 - Blitz 10

REV DEFENSE DOMINATES IN 24-10 VICTORY

6 weeks ago in St. George Utah, the Wasatch REVolution suited up against a talented St. George Blitz team in front of 3,000 fans and proceeded to put a pounding on the Blitz in front of their home crowd. On Saturday, June 20, the Blitz were no where close to being the same squad that lost 48-0 at home. With the South Division championship on the line, the Wasatch REVolution ultimately overcame turnovers by QB Charlie Peterson to win the game, 24-10.

With South Jordan weather being wet throughout the afternoon, the tempo of this football game was much different. It took the REV offense a while to get rolling as the Blitz were determined to win this game. Costly turnovers by errant passes and tipped passes resulted in 6 Blitz takeaways. However, the REV defense was up to the challenge all night. Despite one long run by RB Kyle Coop and a chip shot field goal at the end of half – the REV gave up NOTHING. Without question, the REVOLUTION defense dominated from start to finish.

The REV finished with 6 sacks as linebackers Clint Ackerman and Darin Smith – just as they have all year – rose to the occasion to force the Blitz offense into multiple 3rd and long situations. It seemed the Blitz wanted to run the old “Wing T” offense to start the game – but the REV defensive line of Sam and Sean Matagi, Vince Taunuu and Setema Gali were way to much for the Blitz offensive line.

As well as the REV defense played, the REV offense was mired by penalties, sloppy play and poor throwing decisions by QB Charlie Peterson. With 3 tipped interceptions, the Blitz were getting in passing lanes and the Blitz defensive line was stout. Despite throwing for 358 yards, Peterson just couldn’t get the needed spark in the 1st half. The score at halftime was 9-3.

At the start of the 3rd quarter, the REV offense again sputtered and forced the action back on the defense. Cris Carter, the RMFL all-time leader in interceptions, answered the bell and put the ball back in the REV’s offense hands. On a broken play, an open TE Ryan Seely made a circus catch after the ball was tipped by Blitz All-Star Misi Tupe. Seely would record only 1 catch – but it was a crucial one that put the REV up 16-3 off the Whetman PAT.

With 1:15 left in the 3rd the Blitz found paydirt as RB Kyle Coop took a counter and dashed down his sideline with a convoy of Blitz o-line in front of him. This forced the score to 16-10 and the momentum shift was felt by the REV home crowd.

After another faulty drive, the REV punted and the onus was back on the defense. Again, another timely turnover inside the Blitz 30 yard line. With 11 minutes left in the game, the REV offense had the ball and the lead. How would they respond?

The REV offense would respond with a 7 minute time grinding drive that would put the game away for good. The REV converted two 3rd and short situations and kept the clock churning behind the powerful legs of RB Marcus Whalen. After a few completions to WR/Head Coach Eric Drage, the REV would scoot down to the 6 yard line where Marcus would pound into the end zone after the offensive line manhandled the Blitz defensive line.

The REV would go on to win 24-10. With 6 turnovers by the offense, it’s incredible to see the Blitz were only able to score 10 points against a defense on a mission. Even without RMFL All-Stars Pene Talamaveo and Tracy Ita – the REV defense performed all night long.

This game showcased the DOMINATION of the Wasatch REVolution defense…

(IF you need an auto loan – click here – Online Auto Loan )

This game is full of intrigue as the St. George Blitz lost their first game of the season at the hands of the REVolution 48-0. In that game, the REV had a break out performance with Defensive Coordinator Ev Matagi having the defense perform at their highest level all season. Round 2 proves to be a much more difficult task.

The Blitz feature former Dixie College Head Coach Greg Croshaw and many talented athletes.

The Wasatch REVolution anticipate a hard fought battle for the South Division title.

The game will be held on Saturday, JUNE 20, 2009 at 7 p.m. at BINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL on 10400 s and 2160 w in South Jordan, UT 84095 – Tickets are $5 per person. Please come out and support your 2009 Wasatch REVolution as they work towards their goal of an RMFL Championship!

Superman teams with Incredible Hulk as the Wasatch REVolution dominate 08′ RMFL champions – REV 45 Bears 20

superman-saves-the-day

superman-saves-the-day

After crushing the Cache Valley Bears in week 7, the RMFL stacked the #2 seeded Wasatch REVolution vs. the #7 seeded Cache Valley Bears in the 1st round of the 2009 RMFL Playoffs. With a ferocious intensity, the Bears proved they’re no slouch and they wanted serious revenge from the first whooping they took at the hands of the REV. Sorry Cache Valley – 2009 just wasn’t meant to be your year. Superman Setema Gali and the Incredible Hulk Matt Shoda made sure the REVolution knocked out the Bears.

SUPERMAN started the party off early. With a stirring rendition of the national anthem that had the crowd and REV players on their feet, Setema had everyone fired up from the get go. His energy and passion carried his teammates on the football field as the REV offense started the game very lethargic. The Bears would chew the clock in the 1st quarter behind the heavy duty running of Johnny Grey. The REV defense had no answers. With a 7-0 early touchdown lead, the momentum was in the Bears favor – but it wouldn’t last long. After the Bears forced a “3 and out” on the REV offense, it was back to work for the defense, and the response was powerful.

On a toss sweep Superman stripped the ball, forced the fumble, scooped it up and rumbled to the endzone with a convoy of REV defenders around him. Golden Whetman added the point after and the “race was on” from that point. The Bears never recovered as the REV unleashed a ferocious 2nd quarter all from the spark Superman gave.

After a horrendous 1st quarter start, QB Charlie Peterson ripped off three straight touchdown passes to JD Dawson, Dave Christensen and Ryan Seely. The REV defense continued to pounce and pounce all day long as the Bears were crippled in their game plan. Defensive Coordinator Ev Matagi made outstanding adjustments which countered the 1st TD drive of the game for the Bears. They never responded again until the game was basically over. The REV led 31-6 at the half.

Coming out in the 3rd quarter, SUPERMAN struck again. With a quick “club & rip” he was bearing down on the Bears QB and threw a bone crunching hit, the ball popped loose as DE Tracy Ita jumped on the pile and out popped the ball. Superman jumped on the ball and had his 2nd touchdown of the night! It was all smiles from that point on as the REV continued to roll.

Not to be outdone by SUPERMAN, the INCREDIBLE HULK MATT SHODA also had a whopping game. With 15 minute quarters and the rushing attack a proven strategy for the Bears, THE HULK was lined up for a smash mouth day. He had one hit that knocked the helmet off of the Bears running back that continued to roll 15 yards! The pads were popping all night for Shoda as he recorded a Wasatch REVolution team record with 14.5 tackles. Like a heat sinking missile, he was focused in on the running attack of the Bears and forced the action all night long.

Incredible Hulk Matt Shoda

Incredible Hulk Matt Shoda

Congratulations to both SUPERMAN Setema Gali and the INCREDIBLE HULK Matt Shoda. Both players proved why the Wasatch REVolution have the #1 defense in the RMFL.

REV GAME NOTABLES

The REV continued its defensive dominance by forcing 7 Bears turnovers.
DB’s Jared Harward, Cris Carter and Harold Ragin all recorded interceptions on the day.
WR JD Dawson continues to score TD’s after recovering from a rough shoulder injury.
LG Bryant Jones left fans clamoring for more with pancake blocks all over the place. One particular play, he raced downfield and smashed 3 different Bear defenders.
QB Dakota LaBounty played the full 2nd half. After a rough start, Dakota led the REV on a long touchdown drive to seal the game in the 4th quarter.
K Golden Whetman continued his assault on his point total. He smashed a 47 yard field goal and kicked off with both right and left foot.
WR Rich Garden recovered a Bears attempted onside kick and proves the consummate team player week in and week out.
The REV defense clearly dominated this game from start to finish.

What do YOU think of the REV’s 1st round victory in the playoffs?

PLAYOFFS ARE HERE! REVolution to host defending RMFL Champion Cache Valley Bears in 1st round…

Bears try to swat down the REV

Bears try to swat down the REV

Come support the REV in the playoffs! Saturday night, 7 p.m. Bingham HS – 10600 S 2160 W – South Jordan

The first round of the Rocky Mountain Football poses some very interesting matchups to say the least. The defending champs, the Cache Valley Bears, open up the playoffs against the team that 3 weeks ago sent them packing their bags back to Logan, with a 39-6 win in South Jordan. Well the date has changed, but the team, venue, and time are all the same. This Saturday at 7:00pm, the REVolution will face off once again with the Bears in a quest to see who’s the dominant team in the South.

The Bears have always been known for smash mouth football. The REV have proven this year that they are capable of matching that attack-style of football the Bears are notorious for. In the last matchup between these 2 powerhouses, Ryan Seely took a thunderous shot while coming over the middle by the fearless leader of the Bears, Jay Tupe. Seely was down for a bit, but managed to shake off the hit and continue the game. Boy did he ever. Seely finished the game leading all players from both teams with 7 catches for 142 yds, and 2 TD’s.

The preparation for this game will be a bit different than last game for the REV. The first game was a big question mark, with who’s gonna show up, do they have a special QB or other star player in the wings? Well the playoffs are different in the Rocky Mountain Football League. Each player who participates in the game, has to qualify during the regular season to play in the playoffs. The league requires all players to participate in 3 games as an active player to do so. The Bears boast a mighty roster, touting some highly decorated and experienced players. However, those players must have completed the league minimum in games played. This makes the game planning for REV Head Coach Eric Drage, and Defensive Coordinator Everestt Matagi a lot easier. Game film from the last game should be a good indication of what to expect in this game.

But don’t expect the Bears to roll over and play dead. They will bring it til the very end. There will be 15 minute quarter for the playoffs which could work for both teams. The passing attack of the REV will be able to put more points on the board, which could be scary given that they lead the league in points scored with 48/game. The goal of the REV at this point is to win at all costs to continue to the next round, and remain injury free. Stats do not matter at this point.

Game time is at 7:00pm at Bingham High School. There is possibly onlly 2 home games left. Come support your team and bring your friends as this is gonna be fun. The playoffs are here, let the games begin.

What are you most excited for about this week’s playoff game?

Game 8 Results – Davis Cowboys 0. Wasatch REVolution 72. TAP OUT!!!

Matagi Brothers - TAP OUT!

Matagi Brothers - TAP OUT!

In a game that was “never really a game” the Wasatch REVolution blew the doors off the Davis Cowboys. At 1-6 coming into the game, the Cowboys have been the door mat of the AAA RMFL from the outset. After taking a whooping by the 1st place Shock a week ago, the Cowboys had to travel to the red hot Wasatch REVolution’s home field. The Cowboys never had a chance as the REV opened up the flood gates with strong defensive play. In all likelihood, this game will force the Davis Cowboys down to the AA status in the RMFL.

While Davis made some head scratching mental errors, (not punting the ball down 6-0 on their own 30 yard line) the REVolution made sure to take advantage of the Cowboy miscues all night. Here’s how the TD rampage went down:

Darin Smith interception return for a TD.
Charlie Peterson 9 yard run for a TD.
Perry Laulu 3 yard TD run.
JD Dawson 39 yard TD reception.
Dave Christensen 13 yard TD reception.
Ryan Seely 6 yard TD reception.
Perry Laulu 4 yard TD reception.
Dave Christensen 18 yard TD reception.
JD Dawson 27 yard TD reception.
Sean Matagi fumble recovery TD.

Those were just all the touchdowns. Add all the 7 turnovers forced by the REV defense – Harold Ragin 2 INT’s – and this was just an absolute nightmare for the Cowboys. They were outmatched in every facet of the game and should not be playing at the AAA RMFL level with only 22 players.

All REV players were rewarded for their tremendous hard work and effort placed in the preparation for each game week in and week out. None took more advantage of the opportunities presented than back-up QB Dakota Labounty. Dakota, despite the mercy rule running clock, was able to make high caliber plays. He threw a laser to leaping JD Dawson in the back of the endzone which had everyone saying, “Wow.” Not bad for an 18 year old! Dakota is looking to land at a Div. 1 school on scholarship.

Other REV players made tremendous contributions, the MATAGI brothers brought the pressure all night. Tracy Ita and Matt Taliulu each forced 2 sacks. Matt Shoda was a missile with tackle after tackle behind the line of scrimmage. The Cowboys just couldn’t get anything going all night long. It’s going to be a tough off-season for their organization.

The REV used this game to “tap out” the opposition and warm up for the 2009 RMFL AAA Playoffs!

Game 8 Preview – Davis Cowboys @ Wasatch REVolution

The Doctor Darin Smith

The Doctor Darin Smith

On Saturday, June 6th at 7 p.m. the 1-6 Davis Cowboys will line up against the 6-1 Wasatch REVolution. Despite Cowboys Owner Tim Taylor’s best efforts to field a winning organization, it just hasn’t been their year. They are walking into a firestorm as the Wasatch REVolution are on a 6 game winning streak and look to solidify at least the #2 in the RMFL playoffs.

The REV have some fantastic opportunities in front of them. With a victory over the Cowboys, the REV will have a guaranteed HOME GAME ON SATURDAY, JUNE 13 for the 1st round of the RMFL Playoffs!

There have been some concerns for the REVolution as of late. Nagging injuries are always difficult to overcome. WR Toby Christensen and C John Proctor will be OUT as is All-Star LB Brady Nielson. Also, hurting is LB Brandon Messenger and RB George Uyema. The REV are hoping for a swift recovery from these players in time to field an outstanding team come playoff time.

The REVolution have major advantages it seems in almost every statistical category vs. the Davis Cowboys. For example, the REV have scored 313 points so far this season. The all time record for points scored in a season is held by the 2006 Madison Lions with 396. Also, the most points scored ever in 1 game is held by the Madison Lions with a victory over Fort Hall in 2002. There has never been a team record 100 points in a football game in RMFL history.

Please come out and support the Wasatch Revolution for the final regular season home game! Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Bingham High School on 10600 s and 2160 w. South Jordan, UT.

Here are some game notables:

Jordan Valley Medical Center will be out in full force as this game is sponsored by them. Thank you Jordan Valley!
The REV defense will look to put a stranglehold on the RMFL with the #1 ranking defense.
The REV offense will look to put up major points and maintain the #1 ranking offense.

The REV are counting on your fan support for another wonderful RMFL football game!

Game 7 RMFL Football Results – Wasatch REVolution 39 – Cache Valley Bears 6

Ryan Seely with 1 of his 7 catches

Ryan Seely with 1 of his 7 catches

In a game that was hyped at the beginning of the season as a prospective “Game of the Year” within the RMFL… it turned out to be much more of a “dud” for the Cache Valley Bears. The Wasatch REVolution put on a clinic and constantly hit, smacked, pressured and ultimately dominated last season’s 2008 RMFL Champion. The Bears were more like the Cubs – lovable losers. They managed to put up a fight at the beginning of the game as the REV only led 12-6 at halftime.  However, by the end of the game they were clobbered 39-6.  With 2 weeks off and a little bit of “rust” as Coach Ev Matagi called it, the REV look to get back into dominating form as the regular season comes to an ending and the playoff race begins.

Here’s a recap of the game:

1st half

The REV started on the defensive side of the ball and forced a quick “3 and out” for Cache Valley as CVB QB Dan Sundstrom was unable to get any type of rythm to throw the ball as the REV defense “brought the heat” and forced error after error by the Cache Valley offense. After forcing the punt, the REV offense was unable to generate any offense with a “3 and out” of their own. The scare came early in the game when Ryan Seely was clobbered on a crossing route. It seemed to wake Seely up as he had his best outing of the season.

Defensive safety David Stroshine was special all night long for the REV defense. Stepping in to a bobbled catch attempt, Stroshine grabbed the wobbling ball on an INT and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. It was the 5th interception return for a touchdown by the REV defense. That put the REV up 6-0. Minutes later, Stroshine would have another interception and the REV offense would capitalize with a Charlie Peterson to Matt Shull 48 yard TD reception.

The Bears would answer the bell as they scored on a pass to TE Ben Moa. It was the only score the Bears would have the rest of the night as the league leading REV defense suffocated and blasted the former champs all night long. At the end of the 1st half, the score was 12-6 in favor of the REV.

2nd Half

Left tackle JP Salisbury was not a happy camper at halftime and he let his teammates know it. He called a 12-6 lead “embarrassing” and challenged his offensive teammates to stop playing down to the level of the Cache Valley Bears. Whatever adjustments the REV made at halftime, it worked. Taking the opening drive 80 yards, QB Charlie Peterson completed 5 of 6 passes including a broken play long bomb TD pass to WR Dave Christensen on a 23 yard strike. The Bears jumped off sides on that play and wisely Peterson kept the play alive and threw a high arching toss which Christensen attacked and caught. Golden Whetman would add the PAT and the REV were up 19-6. The momentum just built stronger and stronger from that point.

Minutes after another sack by “Superman” Setema Gali, the Bears were forced to punt. This drive the REV were determined to take the running game to a new level. After a few completions and plays led the REV down to the Bears 3 yard line, the REV called in the “BIG HOG” formation. After a 5-yard penalty forced the REV to back up, the REV stuck to the ground attack. Behind the exceptional running of RB Marcus Whalen and the dominating pancake blocks of RT Aaron McCubbins, the REV scored on a 9 yard scamper by Marcus Whalen. That put the REV up 26-6 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

As the game progressed, the Wasatch REVolution defense continued to put the clamps down on any hope of a comeback. LB Darin Smith was all over the field as he had 5.5 tackles and Clint Ackerman would add 8. The REV constantly forced punts and put up 6 sacks on the night. John Fenene, Tracy Ita, Matt Taliulu all recorded individual sacks. It was just “that kind of night” for the Bears.

At the top of the 4th quarter, QB Charlie Peterson would make 2 big plays that would put the game away for good. Facing a 3rd and 10 situation, the Bears blitzed and Peterson was left for dead as 3 Bears defenders made a dashing beeline towards the 2008 RMFL Offensive MVP, Peterson made a few Fran Tarkenton moves and was running away backwards for about 30 yards – then trying to muster enough to throw the ball out of bounds he saw Marcus Whalen and chucked it. Whalen caught the ball and moved upfield for a 24 yard gain. 1st down REV. A few plays later, after getting sack and facing another 3rd and long situation, Peterson stepped up hard in the pocket to avoid the Bears defenders and found TE Ryan Seely over the middle. Seely made Bears defenders miss and casually strolled into the endzone with a 53 yard score. That was the night for Peterson as the REV led 33-6 and put the game away. QB Dakota LaBounty added to Seely’s night as he threw 2 great receptions to Seely – one of which went for a touchdown. Dakota LaBounty has filled in admirably every time his name has been called. He’s a starter for any other team in the RMFL hands down.

Game Over – REV win 39-6.

Game 7 Preview – Cache Valley Bears @ Wasatch REVolution – Bingham HS – 7 p.m. May 30, 2009

Matt Shoda - Ready to go

Matt Shoda - Ready to go

This upcoming Saturday, 2008 Rocky Mountain Football League champions the Cache Valley Bears from Logan, Utah roll into South Jordan with plans to show the Revolution what its like to play the former champs.  The Revolution are riding on an impressive win streak of 5 games with an average score of 51 – 10 during that streak.  They are hungry to finish out the season on a high note, but first have to get through this Saturday with a win against the Bears.

The were the favorite to win it all in many of the preseason polls.  They have a fully stacked roster of former collegiate talent, that if put together the right way would be a dominant force to be reckoned with.  Unfortunately for the Bears, their Achilles heel  has always been their lack of players traveling and coming together as a complete unit.  The Bears are 3 – 3 on the year and have rotated wins and losses in a W – L – W – L fashion this whole season.   If that pattern holds true then the Revolution are next in line.  The Bears traveled up to Rexburg, ID last Saturday and barely lost to a Northern Division leading Madison Lionz who are now 5 – 1 like the REV.

Both Offensive and Defensive coaches for the Revolution fully expect the Bears to be fully stacked come gametime and ready to make a statement.  The Bears have always showed a propensity to show up for the big game and make a statement.  The REV need to hold their ground and keep the Bears from scoring to ensure they have a good playoff seed for home field advantage.

Prepare for big hits, and great plays this Saturday.  There is some common blood between these two teams as both have played with each other on other teams in years past.  Gametime is 7:00pm at Bingham High School in South Jordan, Utah.

Game 6 Results – REVolution 58 – Wolverines 7

harold-ragin-the-predator

harold-ragin-the-predator

What the heck was the RMFL thinking when it tried to match the Wasatch REVolution with the Utah Wolverines to build a supposed natural in-state rivalry? Rather than have 2 teams battle for supremacy in the AAA South Division, the REV have taken a stranglehold on the division with huge and dominating victories in the past 3 weeks. The REV had 3 straight road wins – Boise, ID – St.George, UT – and now, the Utah Wolverines at Cottonwood HS. After blowing out the Wolverines in the 1st game, the REV coasted to an easy victory that could have been much, much worse for the Wolverines. A blocked punt saved the Wolverines from a “zero” on the scoreboard, but the REV have clearly shown dominance in their conference with their opponents.

Here’s how the Friday Night Lights game went down:

1st Quarter

The tone of the game was set from the very first play of the game when the Wolverines kicked the ball off to The Predator – Harold Ragin. Harold fielded the ball at the 3 yard line and seemed to be gliding up field when Wolverines tackler Joe Mapson had a shot to bring Harold down… but it was not to be tonight…. The Predator shed the tackle and turned on the turbo jets through mid-field before coasting to a touchdown. With just 9 seconds off the play clock, the REV led 7-0 and it was all downhill for the Wolverines from then on out. The Predator struck early and the rest of the REV joined the assault.

On his 1st pass, Peterson completed a short 4 yard TD to Ryan Seely. After a REV stop, David Christensen would haul in a 55 yard TD reception. Then, looking to slam the door early, the REV inserted the Predator for another 33 yard TD pass. In Charlie Peterson’s first 3 passes, 3 resulted in touchdowns. At the end of the 1st quarter, the REV led 28-0.

2nd Quarter

Sensing a route, the REV defense went on attack mode like a bunch of crazed hyenas. An interception by – who else, The Predator – led to another TD pass by Peterson to Toby Christensen. Golden Whetman added a 31-yard field goal and QB Charlie Peterson called it a night after a 5 yard TD pass to Marcus Whalen. On the night, Peterson finished 12 for 14 for 227 yards and 5 touchdowns. At halftime, the REV led 44-0.

3rd Quarter

Coming out of halftime, the REV defense was determined to force a shut out. By holding Joe Mapson to just 2 catches, the REV played “lockdown” defense all night and constantly pummeled the Wolverines front 7. In fact, the Wolverines barely gained 100 yards on the day. It was “shut em’ down D” as the REV forced turnovers and time and time again put the ball in the REV offense hands. With 2:50 left in the 3rd, 18 year old QB Dakota LaBounty (still in high school) threw an 18 yard strike to TE Ryan Seely. Seely had 2 TD’s on the night and has been Mr. Steady all season long for the REV. At the end of 3 quarters, the REV led 51-0.

4th Quarter

As the Wolverines tried to regroup and put a consistent drive together, the REV defense refused to budge. LB Brandon Messenger delivered some big hits with his playing time and LB’s Matt Shoda, Darin Smith and Sean Matagi were playmakers all night long. DB Cris Carter recorded another interception and leads the RMFL in INT’s. With 8:18 left in the 4th, QB Dakota LaBounty again pounced with a 34 yard TD to Rich Garden. “Worm” made an impressive move at the line of scrimmage to beat the jamming Wolverines DB and was off to the races on the perfectly placed spiral from LaBounty. 58-0 REV at that point.

The only time the REV sputtered all night was a “3 & out” series in which the REV was forced to punt. Unfortunately, the skipped snap was received by punter Jordan Lindsey but he was unable to get the kick off in time as the Wolverines blocked the punt. The Wolverines scored on the fumble recovery and erased the shut out from the REV. Big whoop. Final score? WASATCH REVOLUTION 58 – UTAH WOLVERINES 7.

REV Game 6 Notables and highlights

TE Ryan Seely was perfect on the night. 2 catches – 2 TD’s.
The REV defense forced 7 turnovers on the night. Did we type that right? 7?
DB’s Cris Carter, Jared Harward & Harold Ragin all had INT’s.
The REV offense recorded over 400 yards total offense – 300+ thru the air and 100+ on the ground.
The REV defense forced 8 sacks – led by Sam Matagi and Darin Smith with 2 each.
The Predator had 1 Touchdown Kickoff Return, 1 TD reception and 1 Interception with multiple tackles.
Head Coach Eric Drage played again. He recorded 9 yards rushing on 1 attempt and a 14 yard catch.
The Trifecta? You betcha! Defensive Coordinator Ev Matagi turned his brothers loose as Sam & Sean Matagi had 6 tackles and 3.5 sacks between them.
QB Charlie Peterson finished the game 12 for 14 for 228 yards and 5 TD’s.
WR Toby Christensen kept his TD streak alive at 6 games straight.
WR Dave Christensen recorded his 2nd 100+ yards receiving game of the season.

Game #5 Results – “Fully Loaded” Wasatch REVolution give St. George Blitz “the donut” – 48-0 REV victory

stroshine-bros-vs-st-george-blitz

stroshine-bros-vs-st-george-blitz

Heading into Game #5 vs. the St. George Blitz, the Wasatch REVolution had many concerns, St. George had touted a 3-1 record and had been dominant on defense. The St. George Blitz also feature one of the most dominant junior college football coaches ever with Coach Greg Croshaw at the helm. (Coach Croshaw’s JC record? – 214 – 57) The Blitz was the “toast of the town” in the RMFL as they came into the league as a 1st year start up with the Wasatch REVolution. There was much at stake.

WR Toby Christensen reported this to his REV teammates early in the week – “All of the St. George community said they’d heard that the Blitz were undefeated. Then today, my father in law was golfing here in St. George and one of the guys at the course was the Blitz’ starting fullback. He also said that the Blitz were undefeated and were winning all of their games by 30 or more. It was almost as if last week’s game didn’t count to them. Anyway, he went on to tell my father in law that Croshaw said this week, that none of the last games matter to him, but that THIS GAME IS THE ONE HE WANTS. This is their big game, he told the players.

Playing a team coached by Greg Croshaw had the REV salivating to play this game from the beginning. The REVolution came FULLY LOADED as they fielded their strongest roster of the year. The REV had 46+ players and were fresh from the outset. None of the perception that the “Blitz were the best” mattered as the REV defense pitched a donut – shutting out the St. George Blitz and the REV winning – 48 – 0.

Here’s how the action went down:

1st Quarter

After losing the coin toss, the REV received the football and drove the length of the field to put the REV up 7-0. QB Charlie Peterson completed multiple short passes and RT Aaron McCubbins dominated with LT JP Salisbury, LG Bryant Jones, C John Proctor, RG Ken Byrd simply protected with physical punishment. Add G Vince Taunuu to the mix and it was a “lights out” night for the REV offensive line. The offense set the tempo and it was a long night for the Blitz at home.

As good as the REV offense was, scoring on their first 2 possessions, TD passes to Matt Shull and Toby Christensen, the REV defense was the story of the night. The fully loaded defense brought the heat and pressure on Blitz QB Wes Marshall all night as the REV defensive line and linebackers punished the Blitz offensive line. Matt Shoda finished with 2 tackles for loss and Tracy Ita recorded 2 QB sacks. It seemed to be “3 & out” all night for the Blitz offense.

2nd Quarter

The 2nd quarter saw a punt from the REV offense and the Blitz had life but Brady Nielson quickly forced a knock out hit that sent Wes Marshall reeling. It was a race to the QB all night as the REV “just kept coming”. Darin Smith led the way in tackles with 5 while David Stroshine and the REV secondary delivered monster hits in the secondary vs. the Blitz option running attack.

QB Charlie Peterson completed his 3rd touchdown pass of the night on a play-action pass to TE Ryan Seely. Seely just missed a previous TD in the 1st quarter with a soft overthrow by Peterson. The REV only turnover on the night was on an underthrown “jump ball” to Harold Ragin. Despite that interception, the REV led 21-0 at the half.

3rd Quarter

Coming to the field after halftime, the Blitz seemed to gain some momentum. They stopped the REV offense and then the mistake that ultimately bid the Blitz goodbye occured at the 7:01 mark in the 3rd. Blitz QB Wes Marshall threw an interception to a wide open Matt Stroshine who made the catch and streaked to the end zone for the REV. Figuring it was time for a celebration, Stroshine leaped towards the goal post and tried to dunk…. but he was like John Stockton and ended up plopping a lay up. Looks like Setema and Tracy Ita need to teach Stroshine some dance moves. The score put the REV up 28-0.

Later in the 3rd, the REV got the ball at their 24 yard line. Wanting to put the game away, Head Coach Eric Drage called for Harold Ragin. “The Predator” recorded his second 70+ yard reception of the year after getting behind the Blitz secondary and scoring on a long bomb. Making a spectacular one handed over the shoulder catch, Ragin caught the “can of corn” pass from Peterson and galloped for a 76 yard score. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the REV led 34-0.

4th Quarter

Things turned testy in the 4th quarter after RB Marcus Whalen delivered a 9-yard TD run. The Blitz were clearly frustrated and showed it with a 3 on 1 gang pile on LG Bryant Jones. Jones, trying to protect himself, was ejected from the game as well as a Blitz player. Both benches were visibly upset at the lack of control by the heated contest. Like a bunch of wild hyenas, the REV defense again responded as they forced another Blitz punt. On the night, the Blitz punted 5 times.

QB Peterson would again capitalize on a 28 yard scoring reception by Toby Christensen and the REV would run out the clock with a 48-0 victory.

Game 5 Analysis and Notables:

The REV defense would pitch their first shut out of the season. The only time the Blitz threatened was first and 10 from the REV 14 yard line and the REV defense would ultimately force the Blitz to punt on that possession.

Former NFL players David Stroshine and Justin Ena both delivered crushing blows on Blitz receivers and RB’s.

Tracy Ita, Brady Nielson, Matt Shoda and Dennis Glasker recorded full sacks.

The REV defense had 22 players record tackles.

Toby Christensen continues atop the RMFL receiving leader board with 7 catches for 93 yards and 2 TD’s.

Kicker Golden Whetman continued his dominance in the kicking game as the REV overwhelmed the Blitz in field possession throughout the game.

8 different REV receivers caught passes. Marcus Whalen recorded his longest reception of the year with a 32 gain.

REV running game moved the chains as RB Jerome Bady finished with 7.5 yards per carry on 4 powerful rushes.

The REV scored their 5th defensive touchdown of the year with Matt Stroshine’s pick 6.

QB Charlie Peterson finished 19-29 for 309 yards and 5 TD’s and 1 INT.

The REV face rival Utah Wolverines on Friday night – May 15th at 7 p.m. at Cottonwood HS
